Sarah’s lungs became tighter and tighter with every minute they got closer to the law offices of Jennings, Morrow and Smith. As they pulled to a stop in front of the large building located on the outskirts of town, she felt beside herself and could hardly breathe.

She’d gotten Colton into this mess, and she couldn’t let him take the fall for her. No, she wanted to be there when he talked to Alfred Jennings. She couldn’t send Colton onto the battlefield alone. It wasn’t right.

“I need to talk to Jennings, Colton,” Sarah announced, resolve solidifying inside her.

Colton glanced at her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Your face is all over the news.”

She knew what the consequences would be—for both of them. And if the police came after Colton, she fully intended on telling them this was all her doing and that she’d coerced him in some way to participate.

“This is my mess,” she told him. “I want to be a part of this.”

“Sarah, Jennings could call the police. This could be like walking into the police station and it will undoubtedly get you arrested.”

Sarah’s stomach squeezed at hearing the words out loud. But she couldn’t back down. “I know. But I don’t want to sit in the car with Buzz. I’m no safer being away from you while you’re doing these investigations than I am being with you.”

Colton’s jaw tensed, and he said nothing for a minute. Finally, he shrugged. “It’s your choice. I advise against it, but I can’t stop you.”

Sarah released her breath. “Thanks. I’m going.”

Colton glanced into the backseat. “What about Buzz?”

“I was thinking he could wait in the truck.”

“While we go into the office building?”

“Actually, Loretta told me that Jennings has a hot dog every day for lunch from his favorite stand outside the building. Regardless of the weather, his health, anything. He’s a creature of habit.” She glanced at her watch. “We should be able to catch him there. If we park close enough, we can keep an eye on Buzz also.”

“It sounds like a plan.”

As Colton looked for a parking space, Sarah borrowed his phone and looked up Alfred Jennings’s picture. She found it easily and studied the image of the man. He appeared to be in his late sixties. He had reddish-brown hair, ruddy skin, and he looked about twenty pounds overweight.

Colton parallel parked in front of the building. “You stay here, boy. Okay?”

Buzz whined.

Colton cracked his window and glanced at Sarah. “You sure you’re good with this? It’s not too late to change your mind.”

“Yeah, I’m sure.” She wasn’t positive where her courage came from. But she was determined to be an active part of this investigation. Colton wasn’t going to be out here alone anymore. She nodded toward the distance. “There he is.”

Colton followed her gaze until it stopped on Alfred Jennings. Just as Loretta had said, the man stood beside a hot dog stand and pulled some money from his wallet before being handed his lunch, wrapped in aluminum foil.
